Life in Shadow

I was a shadow puppet.
I had no form that he
did not give me.
I had no movement
apart from him.
Muted against the backdrop of
his mood,
his inclinations,
his demands,
the hint of light was for his benefit.
The darkness
filled me
changed me
warped me.
He liked it dark.
But the light came anyway.
And when the darkness was gone,
I was alone…
the puppet master gone.
And I breathed my first breath…
and it was good.
