Grace’s Tree

See this — this is self-restraint.
It is diametrically opposed to who I am naturally
but a gargantuan part of who I am to be.
Therefore, I will cling to it like a sinking man
to the trunk of a tree
that graciously grows
out of the bank
adjacent to the waters.
I will climb
to the uppermost side of it
to look down
at the rivers of unrestraint rush by
and marvel at how I escaped being swept away,
at least this time—
by grace.
